Tragedy in Spartanburg: 17-Year-Old Kory Nathaniel Fredericks Fatally Shot at Local Sports Store
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — A devastating tragedy has shaken the Spartanburg community after 17-year-old Kory Nathaniel Fredericks was fatally shot on Sunday night at Academy Sports + Outdoors. Fredericks, a recent Dorman High School graduate from Duncan, died from his injuries early Monday morning at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a shooting at the sports store located at 100 Peachwood Center Drive. Upon arrival, deputies found Fredericks critically wounded and transported him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:47 a.m.
A second victim was also found at the scene and remains in critical condition. Authorities are withholding further details as the investigation continues.
The shooting occurred amid a large gathering in the parking lot of Academy Sports + Outdoors, leaving many in the community in shock and mourning.

A vigil to honor Kory’s life is scheduled for Saturday, June 28, at 8 p.m. at the site of the shooting. Attendees are encouraged to bring balloons in school colors, prayers, and memories to celebrate his life.
