Tragic Loss: 13-Year-Old Jaylen Martinez, Promising Benedictine Student and Basketball Enthusiast, Dies in Accidental Shooting in Henrico Home
HENRICO, Va. — The Henrico community is grieving the loss of 13-year-old Jaylen Martinez, who tragically died Monday, June 23, following an accidental shooting inside a home on Grey Rock Lane.
Henrico Police responded to the 6400 block of Grey Rock Lane around 1:25 p.m. after reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found Jaylen inside the residence with a gunshot wound to his leg. Despite immediate efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jaylen was set to begin attending Benedictine this fall, and family and friends describe him as a bright and compassionate young man. His mother, Ciera, and grandmother have expressed a desire for the community to remember Jaylen’s legacy as a great kid who brought people together.
Known for his love of basketball, Jaylen shared a deep connection to the sport through his family. His father, former Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) basketball star Joey Rodriguez, made waves on the court during his career. However, Ciera emphasized that Jaylen should be remembered for his own achievements and unique spirit.
“Jaylen smiled. He was just a great kid,” said Jaylen’s basketball coach, Lionel Bacon. “He was a connector who brought people together just by being himself. Everyone wanted to be around him.”
VCU Director of Athletics Ed McLaughlin released a statement offering condolences and support to the Martinez and Rodriguez families. “Jaylen was a rising star in the local basketball scene and a lifelong VCU Ram through his family ties. We stand ready to support his loved ones through this devastating time.”
