Man Fatally Shot After Attending Funeral in Norfolk; Community Stunned by Brazen Daylight Attack
NORFOLK, VA — June 27, 2025 — What should have been a solemn moment of remembrance turned into a scene of horror and heartbreak on Friday afternoon when a man was gunned down just moments after attending a funeral service in Norfolk.
The fatal shooting occurred around 1:00 p.m. near the Metropolitan Funeral Home in the 100 block of Fife Street, according to the Norfolk Police Department. Responding officers arrived at the scene to find one man dead and another injured following a hail of gunfire outside the funeral venue. The second victim’s injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
Witnesses told police the victim had just exited the funeral service when two suspects opened fire. The chilling incident left mourners running for cover and has sent shockwaves through the community.
“It was like something out of a nightmare,” said Barbara Fields, who identified the deceased as her nephew. “He had just come to pay his respects. Now he’s the one being buried next.”
Fields added that her nephew leaves behind a young daughter, making the tragedy all the more painful.
Officials Condemn Violence at Sacred Space
Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi issued a strong condemnation of the attack, stating:
“A funeral is a sacred space — a place to grieve and find peace. This level of violence is not only unacceptable, it is inhuman. We will do everything in our power to bring those responsible to justice.”
So far, no arrests have been made, and the names of the deceased and injured have not been officially released.
