Bicyclist David Michael O’Brien II Dies After Collision with Pickup Truck in Bingham Township

BINGHAM TOWNSHIP, MI — June 30, 2025
A tragic accident at the TART Trail crossing on South Center Highway has resulted in the death of a local bicyclist, identified as Daniel Michael O’Brien II of Trenton, Michigan. The collision occurred late Sunday afternoon and is currently under active investigation.

At approximately 5:55 p.m. on June 29, deputies from the Bingham Township Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the intersection of the TART Trail and South Center Highway, north of Donner Road, following reports of a vehicle and bicyclist collision.

Preliminary findings indicate that a 2020 Chevrolet pickup truck towing a boat trailer, driven by a 38-year-old woman from Suttons Bay, was traveling northbound on South Center Highway. At the same time, O’Brien was riding his bicycle eastbound along the TART Trail approaching the intersection.

Investigators report that O’Brien failed to properly negotiate the intersection and entered the roadway, leading to a collision with the pickup truck. Emergency responders immediately transported O’Brien to Munson Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many expressing grief and extending condolences to O’Brien’s family and loved ones.

The Michigan State Police are assisting the Bingham Township Sheriff’s Office with the ongoing investigation into the crash. The Suttons Bay / Bingham Fire and Rescue Department, along with the Grand Traverse Band Police Department, also provided assistance at the scene.

Authorities have not released further details at this time and have urged both motorists and cyclists to exercise heightened caution, especially at intersections where trails cross roadways. Investigators continue to work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragic collision.
