COEUR D’ALENE, IDAHO — June 30, 2025

COEUR D’ALENE, IDAHO — A tragic and chilling act of violence unfolded on Canfield Mountain as authorities confirmed the identity of the gunman who ambushed firefighters responding to a deliberately set blaze. The shooter has been identified as 20-year-old Wess Roley, the son of Heather Lynn Caldwell-Cuchiara and stepson of Tony Cuchiara—both known supporters of the MAGA political movement.

According to law enforcement officials, Roley intentionally set a fire on Canfield Mountain, located in the Coeur d’Alene area, in the early hours of the morning. When first responders arrived to contain the blaze, Roley reportedly launched a premeditated and violent attack, opening fire on the unsuspecting firefighters.

Two Firefighters Killed, One Injured in Calculated Ambush

In what investigators are calling a “deliberate ambush,” two firefighters tragically lost their lives in the line of duty. A third firefighter was injured but is currently in stable condition and receiving medical care.

The names of the victims have not yet been publicly released pending family notification. The Coeur d’Alene community, known for its tight-knit population and strong public service values, has been left stunned and heartbroken by the attack.

“This was an unthinkable act of targeted violence against those who risk their lives every day to protect others,” said one local official during a press briefing.

Gunman Found Dead on Mountain

After an extensive search of the mountain area, law enforcement located Wess Roley’s body near the scene. A firearm was found next to him, and early indications suggest he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators are working to determine a motive and whether anyone else may have had knowledge of or contributed to the act.

Sources close to the investigation note that Roley had no known criminal history but may have exhibited signs of mental distress in recent months. A review of his social media and online activities is underway.

Family’s Political Ties Emerge Amid Scrutiny

In the hours following the incident, the suspect’s family became a focus of attention due to their prominent support of the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement. While no immediate connection has been drawn between political ideology and the act itself, online discussions have raised questions about potential radicalization or ideological influence.

Authorities have not confirmed any political motive in the attack and emphasized that the investigation remains focused on facts, motive, and the suspect’s mental health background.

Community in Mourning

The Coeur d’Alene Fire Department, state officials, and residents across Idaho are mourning the devastating loss. Flags have been ordered to half-staff, and a vigil is being planned for the fallen firefighters.

Counseling services are being offered to first responders and the families affected by the tragedy. Fire departments across the state are expected to attend the memorials, demonstrating solidarity in the face of an act that has rocked the emergency services community to its core.
