DARLINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — A young deputy’s promising life was tragically cut short early Thursday morning when he was ambushed while responding to a call involving a wanted suspect. Deputy Devin Mason, 27, was fatally shot in a violent confrontation that also left another deputy injured and ended with the suspect dead.

The incident unfolded at approximately 1:30 a.m. when Deputy Mason and a fellow deputy arrived at a residence in Darlington County. Authorities had been alerted to the presence of a suspect with multiple outstanding warrants. As the deputies entered the home, they were suddenly attacked by the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Cameron Dennett.

In the ensuing shootout, Deputy Mason was struck and succumbed to his injuries. Another deputy was wounded but has since been reported in stable condition following emergency treatment. Dennett, who was prohibited from possessing firearms due to his criminal history, was also killed during the exchange.

Dennett’s criminal record was extensive, with active warrants for forgery, conspiracy, and computer crimes. A wanted woman present inside the home was arrested without incident.

Deputy Mason had just begun his career in law enforcement, graduating from the police academy in March 2025 and completing his field training only last week. His recent engagement to his fiancée, Madi, on December 15, 2024, and the birth of their first child this April, highlighted a future filled with promise and hope.

The local community and law enforcement colleagues are mourning the loss of a dedicated officer taken far too soon. “Deputy Mason embodied the values of service and courage,” said a spokesperson for the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office. “His sacrifice will not be forgotten.”

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the deadly encounter. Plans for a memorial service are underway to honor Deputy Mason’s life and service.
