Houston, Texas — The community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 8-year-old Blake McCrory, a bright and compassionate young girl whose life was tragically cut short during the devastating flash floods that swept through Camp Mystic in Kerr County on July 4, 2025.

Blake had been attending Camp Mystic for just five days when early morning rains unleashed a catastrophic flood along the Guadalupe River, catching campers and staff off guard. The flash flood claimed the lives of at least 27 individuals, including nine children, and left more than 20 people unaccounted for as search and rescue efforts continue.

Described by her grandfather, E. Douglas McLeod of Galveston, as a “precocious, sweet little girl,” Blake was known for her radiant smile and caring nature. The young girl had already endured tremendous loss, having lost her father two months prior, making this tragedy even more profound for her family.

The Houston community has been deeply affected by this event, coming together in support of the families of those lost and missing. Vigils and fundraisers are being organized to provide assistance and to honor the memories of the victims, especially the children who were taken too soon.

Family members, volunteers, and local authorities continue to search tirelessly for those still missing, holding onto hope amid the sorrow. The collective spirit of the community stands strong as they rally to support one another in these trying times.

Blake McCrory’s legacy of kindness and joy will forever be remembered by those who knew her, a shining light amidst the darkness of this tragedy. As Houston grieves, the city also embraces a commitment to stand united, offering love and support to all affected.

The memorial service for Blake is planned to bring together family, friends, and community members to celebrate her life and to find solace in shared memories.
