Tragedy on Chicago’s South Side: Arneka Identified as First Victim in Deadly 87th & Dan Ryan Mass Shooting
CHICAGO, IL — A devastating mass shooting late Sunday night near the intersection of 87th Street and the Dan Ryan Expressway has left the city of Chicago reeling in grief. At least five people were shot and killed in the violent incident, which unfolded outside a gas station in the Chatham neighborhood. One of the victims has now been identified by loved ones as Arneka, a beloved daughter, friend, and community member.
The shooting occurred just after 10:30 p.m., according to the Chicago Police Department. Witnesses described a scene of chaos as multiple gunmen opened fire on a group gathered near the gas station parking lot. Gunshots rang out in rapid succession, sending people running for cover and leaving a trail of tragedy in their wake.
Arneka: A Life Cut Short
Family members confirmed Monday morning that Arneka was among those killed in the shooting. Details about her life and the circumstances leading up to her death are still emerging, but those who knew her remember a woman full of joy and kindness.
“She was the heart of our family,” said her cousin, who asked not to be named. “She always looked out for everyone else. It’s hard to believe she’s gone.”
Though authorities have yet to publicly release all of the victims’ names, Arneka’s identity was shared by loved ones who gathered at the scene throughout the night and into the early morning hours.
City Gripped by Violence Once Again
Chicago police remained on the scene for hours after the shooting, collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing nearby surveillance footage. No arrests have been made at this time, and investigators have not announced a motive.
CPD officials confirmed that five individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. A few others were reportedly injured but have not yet been identified.
“This level of violence is not just heartbreaking — it’s unacceptable,” said a CPD spokesperson in a brief press conference. “We are doing everything in our power to find out who is responsible and bring justice to the victims and their families.”
Community in Mourning
As daylight broke Monday morning, a makeshift memorial began to form outside the gas station, with candles, flowers, and handwritten notes lining the sidewalk. A planned vigil is expected to take place this evening as friends, family, and neighbors gather to remember the lives lost and demand change.
Local leaders and activists are once again calling on city officials to prioritize gun violence prevention, mental health support, and community-based solutions.
“We’ve lost five souls — five families are broken forever,” said community advocate Tanika Johnson. “How many more Arnekas do we have to bury before something changes?”
A Call for Justice
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Chicago Police Department’s tip line or submit anonymous tips through CPD’s website. Investigators are asking area residents and businesses to check their surveillance cameras for any footage that may aid in the case.
As the community mourns and the investigation continues, Arneka’s name will be one that friends, family, and neighbors carry in their hearts — a painful reminder of a life taken too soon in a city desperate for peace.
