LORAIN, OHIO — July 24, 2025 — Authorities in Lorain have released new details following a terrifying and calculated ambush that left three police officers injured and the suspect dead. The Lorain County Coroner’s Office has identified the shooter as 28-year-old Michael Parker of Lorain, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The violent incident occurred just after 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, on River Bend Drive, a quiet dead-end street near Colorado Avenue. Officials say Parker launched a surprise attack on officers from a concealed position, armed with what has been described as an “arsenal of weapons.”

Ambushed During Lunch

According to Acting Lorain Police Chief Michael Failing, officers Phillip Wagner and Peter Gale were sitting in their patrol vehicles on lunch break when Parker suddenly opened fire. Officer Payne, who had been nearby, also came under attack. All three were struck by gunfire.

“This was a deliberate and planned ambush,” said Elyria Police Chief James Welsh, whose department is now leading the investigation. “The suspect used a high-powered rifle against our officers in what appears to be a cold-blooded attempt to take lives.”

Two of the officers — Officer Payne and Officer Wagner — were critically injured and airlifted by Life Flight to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Officer Gale, who sustained a gunshot wound to the hand, was treated and later released from Mercy Health – Lorain Hospital.

Death of the Suspect

Michael Parker was found dead at the scene. Officials have not yet confirmed whether his death was the result of police gunfire or a self-inflicted wound. The Lorain County Coroner’s Office is continuing its examination.

Following the incident, a search warrant was executed at Parker’s residence on Lakeview Boulevard, where investigators worked through the evening to gather evidence. Authorities later declared the scene secure.

A City in Shock, Officials Respond

The attack sent shockwaves through the Lorain community and sparked a flood of support for the injured officers and the entire police department.

“We love our Lorain police officers. I consider them the best in the state of Ohio,” said Lorain Mayor Jack Bradley, speaking to reporters outside MetroHealth on Wednesday. “It’s a tragic day in the city of Lorain, but we’re a strong city and we’re going to move forward.”

Bradley noted he received a personal call from Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, who pledged “100% support” to the city and offered any resources needed. Bradley also shared that the office of U.S. Senator Jon Husted reached out with similar assurances of federal support.

Community Rallying Behind Officers

As news of the ambush spread, community members began leaving messages, prayers, and support on social media for the injured officers. Law enforcement agencies across Ohio have also expressed solidarity with the Lorain Police Department, many using the hashtag #LorainStrong.

Local organizations have begun coordinating blood drives, fundraisers, and meal donations for the officers and their families. The city is planning a formal community vigil later this week.

Investigation Continues

The Elyria Police Department, along with state and federal partners, are continuing to investigate the motive behind the ambush. While Parker had no known recent criminal record, sources say authorities are reviewing prior encounters and online activity to determine whether he left behind any manifestos or warning signs.

Chief Welsh emphasized that the incident serves as a painful reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement every day.

“Our officers risk their lives every time they put on the uniform,” he said. “We’re grateful today that none of these heroes lost their lives. But we are committed to getting answers and delivering justice.”

More updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
