Lorain Police Officer Phillip Wagner Killed in Targeted Ambush Shooting

LORAIN, OH — July 24, 2025 — A veteran police officer has been shot and killed in what authorities are calling a “targeted ambush” in the city of Lorain, shaking the community and prompting an immediate, multi-agency investigation into the deadly attack.

Officer Phillip Wagner, 32, a respected six-year member of the Lorain Police Department, was gunned down Thursday evening while responding to a call for service. Despite life-saving efforts, he died from his injuries at a nearby hospital.

What Happened: A Deadly Trap

According to police, the incident occurred just before 8:00 p.m. near East 36th Street and Globe Avenue, a residential section of South Lorain. Officer Wagner was dispatched to the area for what appeared to be a routine suspicious activity call. As he approached the scene, he was ambushed by a gunman who opened fire without warning.

“This was a deliberate, calculated attack on a police officer — a public servant doing his job,” said Lorain Police Chief James McCann during an emotional news briefing. “Officer Wagner was murdered in the line of duty. He never even had the chance to defend himself.”

Officers arriving moments later found Wagner critically wounded and immediately began CPR before medics transported him to Mercy Health – Lorain Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Suspect in Custody, Motive Under Investigation

Police confirmed that one suspect is in custody, though officials have not yet released a name or motive. Early reports suggest the shooter may have lured officers to the location with the intent to kill.

Who Was Officer Phillip Wagner?

Officer Wagner joined the Lorain Police Department in 2019 following his honorable service in the United States Marine Corps. He was known among his peers as calm under pressure, loyal to his team, and committed to protecting the community he grew up in.

A native of Lorain, Wagner was married to his high school sweetheart, Jessica, and was the father of two young children.

“We are witnessing a disturbing trend of targeted violence against officers,” the FOP said. “We demand justice — and change.”
