Midland Mourns the Loss of Beloved Community Member Henry “Crickett” Vela, 34, Killed in Tragic I-20 Collision
MIDLAND, TX – The Midland community is grappling with profound grief following the tragic death of Henry Anthony Vela, affectionately known as “Crickett,” who was killed in a head-on collision during the early morning hours of Saturday, July 26, 2025. Just 34 years old, Henry’s sudden passing has left a heartbreaking void in the lives of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The fatal crash occurred shortly after 2:00 a.m. along a stretch of Interstate 20 near Midland. According to authorities, Henry was driving eastbound in a 2004 Ford F-150 when his vehicle collided head-on with another car. Both vehicles erupted into flames upon impact. Emergency responders pronounced both drivers deceased at the scene. The other driver has since been identified as 78-year-old William Randolph Smith.
A Devoted Husband, Father, and Grandfather
Henry’s life revolved around his deep devotion to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Steph, and their ten children, as well as three grandchildren who brought endless joy to his heart. His home was a sanctuary of love, filled with laughter, resilience, and an unwavering sense of togetherness.
Friends remember Henry as a man who worked tirelessly to provide for his large family and never missed a moment that mattered — from birthday parties and school plays to everyday dinners and bedtime stories.
“Family was everything to Henry,” said a close friend. “He loved his role as a father and grandfather more than anything. The pride in his eyes when he talked about his kids was unforgettable.”
