Terror in Midtown: 6 Shot in Manhattan High-Rise—Shooter Shane Tamura Dead, FBI Leads Investigation

NEW YORK CITY — July 28, 2025 — What began as a routine evening in Midtown Manhattan quickly descended into chaos and bloodshed as a heavily armed gunman opened fire inside a towering skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue, killing at least four people and injuring several others before taking his own life.

The shocking incident sent waves of panic through one of the city’s busiest commercial corridors and prompted an immediate response from the NYPD, FBI, and Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Suspect Identified: Shane Devon Tamura

Authorities have confirmed the identity of the shooter as Shane Devon Tamura, a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas, Nevada. Investigators say Tamura entered the high-security building wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with an AR-style rifle, looking “deliberate and prepared.”

He reportedly had no major criminal record and carried a valid concealed-carry permit from Nevada. However, the motive behind the attack remains under investigation.

“Tamura did not fire randomly. He appeared to have a specific target or purpose. That’s what we’re trying to understand right now,” said a senior NYPD official during a press conference.

 Timeline of Events

The gunfire began just after 6:30 p.m. in the lobby of 345 Park Avenue, which houses global corporations including Blackstone, KPMG, and the NFL’s corporate offices. Witnesses described hearing a barrage of shots, followed by screams and frantic evacuation efforts.

Tamura reportedly made his way to the 32nd or 33rd floor, where he was later found dead in a stairwell, the result of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

 Casualties and Victims

At least six people were shot, and four were confirmed dead by 8 p.m., including a veteran NYPD officer who was working a private security detail inside the building. The other victims have not yet been named publicly, pending notification of their families.

Several others remain hospitalized in critical condition. Trauma teams at NYU Langone and Mount Sinai are treating multiple patients with gunshot wounds.

Witness Accounts Paint a Terrifying Picture

“It was a normal Monday until we heard the shots. People were diving under desks, locking doors, calling their families,” said Jasmine Holt, who works on the 30th floor. “I’ll never forget the sound.”

Security footage released late Monday shows Shane Tamura entering the building calmly, rifle in hand, before opening fire. The chilling image has now been shared across law enforcement channels and the media.

 Federal Agencies Mobilized

Due to the scale and nature of the attack, the FBI, ATF, and JTTF immediately launched a joint investigation. While no evidence currently points to terrorism, officials are analyzing Tamura’s digital footprint, travel history, and possible links to anyone in the building.

A search warrant has been executed at Tamura’s residence in Las Vegas, and federal investigators are looking into whether he traveled to New York with the intent to carry out this attack.

 Why 345 Park Avenue?

The building is one of Manhattan’s most secure and elite office towers, home to Fortune 500 companies and government contractors. Tamura may have had a connection to someone in the building, though that has not yet been confirmed.

Investigators say his movements indicate he knew the layout, heading directly to the upper floors after firing in the lobby.

 City and State Officials Respond

Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul expressed outrage and grief over the incident.

“New York is hurting tonight. We lost a brave officer and innocent lives because of senseless violence. We will leave no stone unturned in this investigation,” said Mayor Adams.

The city has activated mental health support lines and deployed crisis teams to help workers traumatized by the shooting.

 The Aftermath

By 9:00 p.m., NYPD confirmed the scene was secure. However, investigators remained on-site late into the night, sweeping each floor for evidence and interviewing dozens of witnesses.

The motive behind Shane Tamura’s rampage remains the biggest unanswered question. Police say more updates will be released as digital forensics and interviews develop over the next 24–48 hours.

 Suspect Image Released

Officials have distributed a surveillance image of Shane Devon Tamura moments before the attack. Anyone with additional information about his activities leading up to the shooting is urged to contact 1-800-577-TIPS or the FBI tip line.
