Danville City Councilman Lee Vogler Critically Injured in Fire Attack; Suspect in Custody

DANVILLE, VA — July 30, 2025 — The city of Danville is in shock after a horrific and targeted act of violence on Wednesday morning left City Councilman Lee Vogler critically injured. According to the Danville Police Department, Vogler was intentionally set on fire in what authorities are calling a personal and premeditated attack.

Set on Fire Outside His Workplace

At approximately 11:30 a.m., emergency services were dispatched to the 700 block of Main Street after reports of a man being lit on fire. Witnesses described a disturbing scene in which the assailant entered Vogler’s place of work, poured a flammable liquid on him, and forced him outside before igniting the fluid, engulfing Vogler in flames.

First responders from the Danville Fire Department and Danville Life Saving Crew quickly arrived and provided life-saving treatment. Vogler was airlifted to a regional trauma center. As of the latest update, he remains in critical condition, though no further medical details have been released.

 Suspect Arrested After Fleeing the Scene

Thanks to detailed eyewitness accounts, police were able to locate and arrest the suspect within minutes of the attack. Authorities identified the attacker as 29-year-old Shotsie Hayes. Hayes fled in a vehicle, but officers were able to track him down several blocks away and took him into custody without incident.

He now faces formal charges, and authorities confirmed he remains in custody.

In a statement to the press, investigators clarified that the attack does not appear to be politically motivated and was not connected to Vogler’s public duties as a councilman. Instead, officials believe the violence stemmed from a personal dispute between Vogler and Hayes.

“This was a targeted attack with deeply personal motives,” said Danville Police Chief Scott Booth. “There is no indication this was related to Mr. Vogler’s role as a public official.”
