Gunfire Erupts on W 77th Street in Shreveport, Renewing Fears Amid Rising Violence
SHREVEPORT, LA — July 30, 2025 — Tensions continue to escalate in Shreveport’s Cedar Grove neighborhood after a Tuesday night shooting on W 77th Street left one person injured and many residents rattled. The incident, which took place near the intersection of W. 77th Street and Dowdell Street, is the latest in a disturbing trend of violence gripping the city.
According to the Shreveport Police Department, officers responded to multiple calls of gunfire around 9:30 p.m. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound to the foot. The victim was treated on scene and transported to a nearby hospital. His injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.
Witnesses Describe Chaos
Local residents described hearing a rapid series of gunshots followed by screams. “It sounded like six or seven shots—really close together,” said one neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous. “Then we heard someone yelling in pain. It’s terrifying to think it happened just down the street.”
Witnesses also said multiple police vehicles and emergency crews quickly swarmed the area, securing the scene and launching an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Police Investigation Underway
The SPD’s Violent Crimes Unit is actively investigating the incident. Detectives were seen canvassing the area for shell casings, collecting surveillance footage, and speaking to neighbors in an effort to identify potential suspects. As of Wednesday morning, no arrests have been made and the motive remains unclear.
Authorities believe the shooting was targeted, though they have not yet confirmed if the victim knew the shooter. Officers have urged any residents with home security cameras in the area to come forward and share their footage.

A Community on Edge
The shooting has reignited fears in the Cedar Grove neighborhood, which has been plagued by rising violence throughout 2025. Many residents say the area no longer feels safe, even during daylight hours.
“This used to be a quiet street,” said one longtime resident. “Now we’re scared to sit on our porches or let our kids play outside. Something needs to change.”
Tuesday’s shooting is just the latest in a string of violent incidents that have put Shreveport under scrutiny. City leaders have vowed to increase police presence and explore community-based interventions, but many locals say the pace of change is too slow.
City Leaders Respond
Mayor Tom Arceneaux addressed the community’s concerns during a briefing earlier this week, acknowledging the need for stronger action to curb gun violence.
“Every act of violence in our neighborhoods is unacceptable,” the mayor said. “We are deploying more resources to the hardest-hit areas and working with community partners to find solutions.”
The mayor has also encouraged residents to attend upcoming community meetings aimed at building trust between police and the public.
What’s Next?
As the investigation continues, residents remain hopeful that the person responsible will be brought to justice—and that broader efforts to reclaim peace in their neighborhoods will gain momentum.
