ALL FOUR VICTIMS IN AUGUSTA SHOOTING IDENTIFIED AS JUVENILES; TWO CHARGED WITH MURDER
SOUTH AUGUSTA, GEORGIA — Authorities in Richmond County have identified all four victims involved in a tragic shooting that unfolded in South Augusta, sending shockwaves through the Meadowbrook community. The shooting claimed the life of a 14-year-old girl and left three other juveniles injured — one of whom is now facing a murder charge alongside an adult suspect.
Victims Identified
According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting took place near the Meadowbrook Drive area on the evening of Saturday, August 2, 2025. Four juveniles were struck by gunfire:
- Deandra Howell, 14 – Fatally shot at the scene. Her death has devastated her family and community.
- Vincent Carter Jr., 16 – Injured, and later charged with murder in connection to the incident.
- Zyion Carter, 16 – Suffered injuries; expected to recover.
- Josiah Overton, 12 – Injured; remains in stable condition according to authorities.
Charges Filed: Teen Among the Accused
In a stunning development, officials announced that Vincent Carter Jr., one of the injured teens, has been formally charged with murder. He now faces serious criminal charges along with Nametrius McClam, 18, an adult suspect also linked to the deadly gunfire. Both have been booked into custody as the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation.
Connection to “Water Boys” Activity
Investigators are also probing claims that the teens involved may have been part of a group locally known as the “Water Boys” — young individuals who sell bottled water to motorists at busy intersections, particularly in the Meadowbrook area. This street-level activity, while often seen as a hustle by youth to earn quick money, has previously raised concerns regarding safety, territorial disputes, and altercations with drivers or among groups themselves.
Witnesses at the scene told investigators that a dispute may have erupted earlier in the day among teens in the area, potentially related to turf or money. However, authorities have yet to confirm a direct motive and emphasize that the investigation remains ongoing.
Community in Mourning
The loss of Deandra Howell, described by neighbors as a “bright, kind-hearted soul,” has left the community in grief. A growing memorial of flowers, stuffed animals, and candles now marks the area where the tragedy unfolded.
Local leaders, including members of Augusta’s youth outreach programs, have called for urgent intervention and community engagement to address the escalating violence among young people in the region.
“These are children,” said a Meadowbrook resident who wished to remain anonymous. “We shouldn’t be losing kids to gun violence — and we certainly shouldn’t be arresting kids for murder. This has to stop.”
Investigation Continues
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that they are reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with witnesses. Anyone with information is urged to contact the sheriff’s office or submit anonymous tips through local Crimestoppers channels.
Authorities are also exploring whether any firearms recovered were obtained illegally and whether gang-related activity may have played a role in the shooting.
