August 4, 2025 — Aurora, Colorado
A weekend tragedy has left one woman dead and another fighting for her life following a domestic-related double shooting in Aurora, Colorado. After an intense manhunt, Aurora Police Department (APD) confirmed the arrest of 30-year-old Michel Jordan Castellano-Fonseca early Monday morning.
The shooting occurred just after 3 a.m. on Sunday, August 3, at an apartment in the 1000 block of Cimarron Circle in north central Aurora. According to police, Castellano-Fonseca allegedly forced his way into the residence, where two women and five children — ranging in age from 1 to 15 — were present. He then opened fire, striking both adult women.
A 26-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, a 30-year-old woman, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital where she remains in critical condition. Miraculously, none of the children inside the apartment were physically harmed, though police say they were exposed to the traumatic incident.
APD launched a citywide manhunt for Castellano-Fonseca, describing him as armed and dangerous. Investigators quickly identified the shooting as a potential domestic violence case, alleging that Castellano-Fonseca had previously made threats to return to the apartment with a firearm.
“This level of gun violence, particularly when children are involved, is absolutely unacceptable,” said an Aurora Police Department spokesperson. “APD will not stand for any amount of gun violence in our community and is fully committed to bringing those responsible to justice.”
Castellano-Fonseca was located and taken into custody around 6 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Mississippi Avenue and Chambers Road. Police said he was captured without further incident and is now facing multiple felony charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, and multiple counts of child abuse due to the presence of minors during the shooting.
Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims pending notification of next of kin. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence, conduct interviews, and piece together the events that led to the shooting. It remains unclear what specific relationship Castellano-Fonseca had with the victims, though police confirmed there were prior domestic incidents reported.
The Aurora community has expressed grief and outrage at the violence. Local advocacy groups for domestic violence survivors have called for stronger interventions and resources for those experiencing abusive relationships. “This tragedy is another painful reminder that domestic violence can turn deadly in an instant,” said Maria López, director of the Aurora Women’s Shelter. “We must do more to protect women and children in vulnerable situations.”
The children who witnessed the shooting are now in the custody of social services, receiving psychological support and counseling. Police say their long-term care is being prioritized in coordination with local child welfare agencies.
Anyone with additional information about the incident is urged to contact Aurora Police or submit anonymous tips through Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867).
