Remembering Dr. David McConoughey: Esteemed Physician, Faithful Servant, and Compassionate Soul

WESTLAKE, OHIO — The community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Dr. David McConoughey, a beloved physician, devoted member of Journey Church, and a beacon of compassion, dedication, and faith. Dr. McConoughey passed away after a courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of healing, humility, and hope that touched countless lives both in and out of the hospital.

For many, Dr. McConoughey was more than a doctor — he was a steady, calm voice during chaotic moments, a mentor to many young physicians, and a cherished friend who always made time for others. Whether it was through his leadership at University Hospital St. John Medical Center or his quiet acts of kindness, his impact was profound.

A Life Devoted to Healing and Service

Dr. McConoughey’s journey into medicine was inspired early in life, sparked by a childhood fascination with anatomy and encouraged by his mother, who worked as a receptionist at the Cleveland Clinic. That spark grew into a life of service, scholarship, and leadership.

He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from the Chicago School of Osteopathic Medicine in 2007, followed by an intensive internship and residency at St. John Medical Center. He later completed a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Florida – Shands, and became board certified in his specialty.

Over the course of his career, he served as Medical Director at St. John Medical Center, chaired critical hospital committees, mentored residents, and was a respected leader in high-reliability medicine. His professional affiliations included the Society of Critical Care Medicine, American College of Chest Physicians, and American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians.

A Heart for Faith and Community

Outside of medicine, Dr. McConoughey was a passionate follower of Christ. He was an active member of Journey Church, serving faithfully on the Dream Team and bringing the same humility and compassion from the ICU into his church community. His faith gave him strength during his cancer battle — a battle he fought with grace, courage, and unwavering hope.

His church family remembers him as a gentle leader who quietly poured into others and left every space better than he found it. Despite his illness, he remained focused on uplifting others, always offering a kind word, a helping hand, or a quiet prayer.

A Legacy of Compassion

To his patients, he was a lifesaver. To his colleagues, a mentor. To his family, a hero.

In his downtime, Dr. McConoughey enjoyed traveling, playing golf, running marathons, and staying mentally and spiritually strong. He was also a proud supporter of Greenpeace, reflecting his passion for both global and personal well-being.

Though cancer may have claimed his body, it never took his spirit. He now rests with his Savior, free from pain, surrounded by the eternal peace he so firmly believed in.

In Loving Memory

Dr. McConoughey is survived by his loving family, church community, and the many patients and peers who will carry forward his legacy of healing and hope. Plans for a celebration of life service will be announced by his family and Journey Church in the coming days.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to a local cancer support fund or to Journey Church in honor of his legacy of faith and service.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.” – Matthew 25:23
