SOLOMONS, MD — August 4, 2025
Authorities in Calvert County have arrested a 33-year-old man in connection with a violent and unprovoked stabbing that occurred Monday morning outside the Southern Branch Library in Solomons, Maryland.

The suspect, identified as Eugene Terrill Harris of St. Leonard, was taken into custody shortly after the attack, which left an adult female victim with two stab wounds to her upper back. Investigators say there is no known connection between Harris and the victim, and the assault appears to have been entirely random.

Attack Reported at Library

At approximately 10:08 a.m. on August 4, deputies with the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Bureau responded to the Southern Branch Library, located at 13920 HG Trueman Road, following a 911 call reporting a stabbing incident.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found the adult female victim suffering from two stab wounds to her upper back. The woman, who was accompanied by her service dog at the time of the attack, was treated on-site before being airlifted by Medevac to a nearby trauma center. Authorities confirmed her injuries were serious but not life-threatening.

Suspect Apprehended Nearby

Thanks to quick coordination and a focused search, responding deputies canvassed the surrounding area and quickly located the suspect. Harris was found just across the street from the library at the Solomons Fastop convenience store. He was apprehended without incident and transported to the Calvert County Detention Center.

Detectives with the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Bureau responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the ongoing investigation.

 Preliminary Investigation: Random, Unprovoked Attack

According to early investigative findings, the victim had just entered the library with her service dog when Harris allegedly approached her and produced a knife from his pocket, striking her twice in the upper back. There was no prior altercation or communication between the two, and detectives believe the attack was completely unprovoked.

“There is currently no evidence to suggest that the victim and suspect knew each other,” a spokesperson from the Sheriff’s Office stated. “All indications point to a random and senseless act of violence.”

The library was temporarily closed following the incident while detectives processed the scene and collected witness statements.

Charges Filed Against Suspect

Eugene Terrill Harris has been formally charged with the following:

  • Attempted First-Degree Murder
  • Attempted Second-Degree Murder
  • First-Degree Assault
  • Second-Degree Assault

He is currently being held at the Calvert County Detention Center, and no bond has been publicly announced at this time. Additional charges may be considered pending further investigation.

Community Reacts

The random nature of the stabbing has shocked many in the Solomons community, especially given the location—a public library often frequented by families, students, and seniors. Officials have not disclosed any potential motive behind the attack, and it remains unclear whether Harris has a history of mental health issues or previous criminal behavior.

Library officials released a brief statement expressing their concern for the victim and appreciation for the swift action of law enforcement.

 Ongoing Investigation

The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate all aspects of the incident, including surveillance footage, potential witnesses, and any prior behavior by the suspect leading up to the attack.

Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to contact the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Bureau.
