CHICAGO – A night of gun violence shattered the peace in the North Austin neighborhood early Sunday morning, leaving one young woman dead and six others wounded in what authorities are calling a mass shooting.
Chicago Police said the incident unfolded around 2:48 a.m. on the 1600 block of North La Crosse Avenue, when multiple rounds of gunfire erupted. The scene quickly descended into chaos as terrified residents and partygoers scrambled for cover.
The victim fatally struck has been identified as 22-year-old Jashyra Monae, affectionately known by friends and family as “Shyra Shyra.” Despite immediate aid from first responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Six others, ranging in age from 17 to 29, were also shot. Authorities confirmed that three remain in critical condition, while the remaining victims sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. All were transported to area hospitals for treatment.
Witnesses described the harrowing moments that followed the gunfire. “It sounded like it would never end,” said a neighbor who lives nearby. “People were screaming, running — it was pure panic.”
As of Sunday afternoon, no arrests have been made, and police have not released a suspect description. Detectives are canvassing the area, reviewing surveillance footage, and appealing to the public for information that could lead to those responsible.
In the hours following the tragedy, friends and community members gathered at the scene, leaving candles, flowers, and heartfelt messages in memory of Jashyra, described by loved ones as “full of life, loyal, and loved by everyone who knew her.”
City leaders and anti-violence advocates have renewed calls for urgent action to curb the rising tide of shootings in Chicago. “Our hearts break yet again for another family torn apart by senseless gun violence,” one local activist said.
