LOUISVILLE, KY — Tragedy struck Louisville’s Chickasaw neighborhood Wednesday night when a woman, identified as 28-year-old Jermia Offutt, was fatally shot along West Broadway. Authorities confirmed Offutt was four months pregnant, making the case a devastating double loss for her family and community.

Gunfire Erupts on West Broadway

The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) received calls around 9 p.m. about a shooting in the 4100 block of West Broadway near Cecil Avenue. Officers arrived to find Offutt suffering from a gunshot wound.

According to LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell, she was rushed to University of Louisville Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed her identity late Wednesday night, revealing that she was expecting a child.

Family Devastated by Double Tragedy

Loved ones say Offutt was a caring daughter, friend, and mother who had been eagerly anticipating the birth of her baby.

“This is a nightmare we can’t wake up from,” a family member said. “We lost Jermia, and we lost her baby. Our hearts are shattered.”

Investigation Underway

LMPD’s Homicide Unit is actively investigating the case, but no arrests have been made. Police have not released information on possible suspects or motives.

Mitchell urged anyone with information to step forward.

“Even the smallest detail could help,” Mitchell said. “We owe it to Jermia and her family to find those responsible.”

The Chickasaw neighborhood has endured multiple violent incidents this summer, and residents are pleading for stronger safety measures. Local leaders are calling for a combined approach that includes increased law enforcement presence and investment in community programs aimed at reducing violence.
