WINNIPEG, MB — The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) has announced two arrests in connection with the August 5 homicide of 26-year-old Breydon Henry Cadieux-Kwiatkowski, whose death has sent shockwaves through the Boyd Avenue community. Authorities confirmed that both suspects remain in custody as the Homicide Unit continues its investigation.
Incident Overview
On the evening of August 5, 2025, at approximately 7:00 p.m., North District General Patrol officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Boyd Avenue after receiving a report of an unresponsive male. Upon arrival, officers discovered Cadieux-Kwiatkowski suffering from severe trauma. Police immediately provided emergency medical aid before the victim was rushed to hospital in critical condition. Despite life-saving efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries.
The area was quickly cordoned off as detectives from the Homicide Unit began processing the scene, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing available video surveillance.
Breakthrough in the Investigation
On August 12, nearly a week after the fatal incident, members of the Manitoba Integrated Violent Offender Apprehension Unit, with tactical assistance from the WPS Tactical Support Team, executed coordinated arrests.
Authorities confirmed the suspects as:
- Darian Allen Gaige Sam, 27,
- Charged with Manslaughter
- Two counts of Failure to Comply with a Release Order
- Police stated that Sam and the victim were previously acquainted, and that an altercation between the two escalated into fatal violence.
- David Allen Kirton, 64,
- Charged with Accessory After the Fact to Murder
- Investigators allege Kirton assisted Sam in evading police immediately after the killing.
Both suspects have been detained in custody, with court proceedings expected to follow.
Community Shock and Ongoing Questions
The killing has deeply unsettled residents of Boyd Avenue, a neighborhood that has faced its share of violent incidents but continues to strive for safety and community unity. Neighbors described Cadieux-Kwiatkowski as a “familiar face” in the area, and while police have confirmed he and Sam knew each other, the exact nature of their relationship remains under investigation.
“This was a targeted altercation between individuals who were known to each other. We do not believe there is an ongoing threat to public safety,” said a spokesperson for the WPS Homicide Unit.
