Altoona, IA — The Altoona community is reeling after the untimely death of Zachary Scothorn, a 19-year-old Johnston High School graduate and Iowa State University student, who was killed early Friday morning in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 80.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the collision occurred around 2:15 a.m. near the Altoona exit. Investigators say a driver traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes collided head-on with the vehicle Scothorn was driving. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by emergency responders, Scothorn was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Promising Future Cut Short
Scothorn, remembered by family and friends as an ambitious and kind young man, was pursuing a degree in supply chain management at Iowa State University. He had graduated from Johnston High School in 2024, where he was active in academics, extracurriculars, and athletics.
“He had so much ahead of him,” said a close family friend. “Zach was smart, driven, and full of life. His passing is not just a loss to his family, but to everyone who knew him.”
The Crash Investigation
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the wrong-way driver, who was also killed in the crash. Preliminary findings suggest alcohol may have been a factor, though toxicology results are pending. Both directions of I-80 were closed for several hours as investigators reconstructed the accident scene.
The Iowa State Patrol is urging drivers to be alert for wrong-way vehicles and to call 911 immediately if one is spotted. They emphasize that impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of fatal crashes in the state.
Community Grief and Support
News of Scothorn’s passing has sent shockwaves through both Altoona and Johnston. Social media has been flooded with tributes, photos, and memories shared by classmates, teachers, and neighbors.
“Zach was one of the most genuine people I’ve ever met,” wrote one former classmate. “He was the kind of person who made everyone feel included.”
Johnston High School has announced that grief counselors will be available for students and alumni in the coming days.
Remembering Zach
Family members say they want to remember Zach not for the tragedy of his passing, but for the joy and positivity he brought into the world. Plans for a memorial service are underway, and details will be shared once arrangements are finalized.
“He lived his life with purpose and kindness,” his family shared in a statement. “That’s how we want people to remember him.”
A Call for Road Safety
Local leaders and safety advocates are using the tragedy as a somber reminder of the dangers of impaired and reckless driving. Organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) have expressed condolences and reiterated their commitment to preventing such incidents.
As the community continues to mourn, Zachary Scothorn’s life and legacy will remain in the hearts of those who loved him — a young man with boundless potential taken far too soon.
