MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Authorities have released new information about the gunman responsible for the tragic shooting at Annunciation Catholic School and Church in South Minneapolis, which claimed the lives of two students and left 17 others injured.

The suspect has been identified as Robin Westman, 23, of Minneapolis. Police confirmed Wednesday that Westman’s mother, Mary Grace Westman, had previously worked at the school, giving the devastating attack an even more personal connection to the community.

The Tragedy Unfolds

The shooting occurred Wednesday morning during school hours, shattering what was supposed to be a normal day for students and staff. According to Minneapolis police, Westman entered the premises armed and opened fire inside the school building.

Two students, Emily Carlson, 15, and Jacob Ruiz, 16, tragically lost their lives in the attack. Both were described by classmates and teachers as bright, kind, and full of promise. Seventeen others—ranging from young students to staff members—suffered injuries. Several remain hospitalized, though officials say most are expected to survive.

Police were able to quickly secure the building after frantic calls flooded 911 dispatchers. Within minutes, tactical teams entered and neutralized the suspect. Westman died at the scene from what police believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A Personal Connection

Authorities confirmed that Mary Grace Westman, the suspect’s mother, was once employed at Annunciation Catholic School, though her role and the length of her employment have not been disclosed. Investigators are now examining whether her connection to the school may have influenced her son’s decision to target it.

“This new information adds a deeply personal layer to an already tragic event,” said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara during a press conference. “We are looking closely at the suspect’s history, family background, and any possible grievances that may have contributed to this horrific act.”

Community in Mourning

The deaths of Emily Carlson and Jacob Ruiz have devastated the tight-knit Annunciation community. A candlelight vigil is planned outside the church, where hundreds are expected to gather in solidarity, offering prayers and support to the grieving families.

“Our hearts are broken,” said Father Thomas Keane, pastor of Annunciation Church. “Emily and Jacob were beloved members of this school family. Their laughter, energy, and spirit will forever be missed.”

Counselors have been made available for students, teachers, and families to help process the trauma. The school has also announced it will remain closed for the rest of the week.

National and Local Response

Governor Tim Walz expressed his condolences, saying:

“Minnesota is grieving with the families of Emily and Jacob, and we are holding the survivors and community in our hearts. No parent should ever have to fear sending their child to school.”

Local leaders have also renewed calls for stronger school safety measures and greater investment in mental health resources.

Investigation Ongoing

Police and federal agencies are working together to trace Westman’s movements prior to the shooting, including how he obtained the firearm used in the attack. Officials have not yet confirmed a motive.

“We want answers, but we also want to honor the lives of those we’ve lost,” Chief O’Hara emphasized. “Our priority is to give this community the truth while ensuring justice and healing.”

Remembering the Victims

  • Emily Carlson, 15 – remembered as a dedicated student who loved music and dreamed of becoming a nurse.
  • Jacob Ruiz, 16 – known for his bright smile, love of basketball, and dedication to his friends and family.

Both teenagers leave behind grieving families, friends, and classmates who say their absence will be felt forever.

Support for Families

Community members have started fundraisers to help cover funeral expenses and provide support for the injured. Local organizations are also stepping up to ensure resources are available for those in need of counseling and trauma support.

Anyone wishing to contribute may do so through verified channels, with details expected to be released by the school and church in the coming days.

Final Thoughts

This tragedy marks yet another painful chapter in the ongoing national struggle with gun violence in schools. While authorities work to piece together the circumstances that led to the attack, the community of Annunciation Catholic School—and the city of Minneapolis—are left to grieve, heal, and remember two young lives taken far too soon.
