GAYLORD, Minn. – The small town of Henderson and surrounding communities are mourning the loss of 17-year-old Mya Jean Maus, who was killed in a devastating two-vehicle crash early Saturday morning.

The Minnesota State Patrol confirmed that the collision occurred just after 1 a.m. on Highway 19 at 441st Avenue, a stretch of road just east of Gaylord. According to preliminary reports, Mya was driving eastbound when her car collided head-on with a westbound pickup truck.

Authorities say Maus died at the scene despite emergency responders’ efforts. The State Patrol identified her as a Henderson resident, describing the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy that has left family, friends, and the local community reeling.

Other Victims Injured

The westbound pickup was driven by a 17-year-old male, whose identity has not yet been released. He was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) with injuries sustained in the crash. Officials noted that he was not wearing a seat belt at the time.

Two adult passengers in the pickup — Andrew Dennis Cohrs, 50, of Glencoe, and Mitchel Randy Frauendienst, 41, of Winthrop — also suffered severe injuries. Both men were taken to HCMC with what authorities described as life-threatening injuries. Crash investigators noted that neither passenger had been wearing a seat belt.

A Promising Life Cut Short

The loss of Mya Jean Maus, just 17 years old, has sent shockwaves through Henderson, where she was known as a bright and caring young woman with her whole future ahead of her. Friends and loved ones have begun sharing tributes on social media, describing her as “full of light” and someone who made others feel seen and loved.

Community members say it is especially difficult to come to terms with the suddenness of her death — a promising life ended on the cusp of adulthood.

Ongoing Investigation

The Minnesota State Patrol is continuing its investigation into the crash. At this time, no further details have been released regarding what may have led to the collision. Investigators will be reviewing speed, road conditions, and possible contributing factors as part of the ongoing inquiry.

The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety, including the life-saving role of seat belts.

Community in Mourning

Henderson residents have already begun organizing vigils and memorials to honor Mya’s memory and support her family during this unimaginably difficult time.
