HOUSTON – A heartbreaking tragedy has left a Houston neighborhood in shock after 11-year-old Julian Guzman was fatally shot while playing a childhood prank with friends late Saturday night.
The Houston Police Department confirmed officers responded to a shooting just before 11 p.m. in the city’s east side. Investigators say Julian and several friends had been playing the prank known as “ding dong ditch,” where children knock on doors and run away before the homeowner answers.
What began as innocent fun quickly turned tragic when the resident of one home allegedly opened fire. Julian was struck by gunfire, collapsing as his friends ran for help.
Paramedics with the Houston Fire Department rushed the boy to a nearby hospital, where doctors fought to save his life. Despite their efforts, Julian succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, leaving family, friends, and the community devastated.
Authorities have not yet disclosed whether the homeowner has been taken into custody or if charges will be filed. Homicide detectives continue to review surveillance footage, interview witnesses, and gather evidence to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting.
Family members described Julian as a joyful, playful child who loved being outdoors and was full of energy and laughter. The boy’s death has sparked outrage and sorrow throughout the community, with neighbors questioning how a prank so common among children could end with such devastating consequences.
Community members have already begun organizing vigils and support efforts for the Guzman family as they prepare to lay their son to rest.
“This is every parent’s worst nightmare,” one neighbor said. “A child should be safe in his own neighborhood. This should never have happened.”
The investigation remains ongoing, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office is expected to review the case to determine potential criminal charges.
