PORT HURON, Mich. — A quiet Thursday morning turned into tragedy in Port Huron when police say a father opened fire on his three children, killing one and critically injuring two others.
Authorities confirmed that 44-year-old Jeff Smerer was taken into custody after the shooting, which happened just after 6 a.m. on September 11, 2025, at an apartment complex on Glenview Court near Krafft Road and 24th Avenue (M-25).
A Son Lost, Siblings Injured
According to investigators, Smerer fatally shot his 17-year-old son, Kayleb Smerer. Two younger siblings — a 13-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl — were also struck by gunfire. Both remain hospitalized in critical condition as of Thursday evening.
Family Intervention Prevented More Bloodshed
Police say the children’s mother and older brother bravely intervened during the attack, wrestling with Jeff Smerer and preventing even greater tragedy. Their actions are being credited with stopping further violence inside the home.
Shockwaves Through the Community
The deadly shooting has rattled the Port Huron community. Neighbors say the idea of a father turning on his children is “unthinkable” and described the news as devastating.
“This is heartbreaking on every level,” one resident said. “Those kids should have been safe at home.”
Suspect in Custody, Motive Unclear
Smerer is currently being held pending formal charges. Prosecutors are expected to pursue multiple counts, including homicide and assault with intent to murder.
Police have not released a motive but say they are continuing to collect evidence and interview witnesses.
A Family Torn Apart
As investigators work to piece together what led to the tragedy, one family is now left shattered — grieving the loss of Kayleb Smerer and praying for the survival of two more children.
“This case is beyond tragic,” investigators said in a statement. “Our focus is on supporting the victims and ensuring justice is pursued.”
