Columbus, Georgia — With heavy hearts, the Columbus community is remembering Jakobe Delquindre Smith, a 23-year-old firefighter whose life of courage and compassion ended far too soon. Jakobe died by suicide on September 3, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, dedication, and kindness that will never be forgotten.

Born on October 30, 2001, Jakobe was a proud graduate of Spencer High School’s Class of 2020. Driven by his desire to make a difference, he went on to attend Albany State University before fulfilling his calling as a firefighter with the City of Columbus. Colleagues say he served with honor and bravery, always willing to put others before himself.

“Jakobe was more than just a firefighter — he was a brother, a friend, and someone you could count on in any situation,” one fellow firefighter shared. “His heart was as big as his courage.”

Despite his outward strength and dedication, Jakobe quietly battled pain that few could see. His last message — the haunting words “has left the chat” — revealed a glimpse into those private struggles. That simple phrase, now etched in the hearts of those who loved him, serves as a reminder of how even the strongest among us may carry unseen burdens.
