MISSISSIPPI — Authorities have confirmed two tragic deaths by hanging in Mississippi within a 24-hour span, leaving communities in shock and prompting widespread concern. The victims have been identified as 21-year-old Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a Delta State University student, and 36-year-old Cory Zukatis, a man confirmed to be unhoused in Vicksburg.

Delta State University Mourns the Loss of Trey Reed

On the morning of Monday, September 15, 2025, Delta State University police discovered Trey Reed’s body hanging from a tree near the pickleball courts on campus. Reed, originally from Grenada, Mississippi, was a beloved member of the student community.

The university immediately suspended scheduled activities and released a statement expressing sorrow at the loss. Students, faculty, and friends gathered for impromptu vigils across campus, with many describing Reed as a “bright light” and a young man who touched countless lives.

Chief Mike Peeler of the Delta State University Police Department confirmed that investigators are working to determine the full circumstances surrounding Reed’s death. Counseling services have been made available to all students and staff.

Cory Zukatis Found in Vicksburg

Later the same morning, around 10:30 a.m., first responders in Vicksburg were called to a wooded area near the Ameristar Casino. There, they found Cory Zukatis, 36, hanging from a tree. Authorities later confirmed Zukatis was unhoused at the time of his death.

The discovery has rattled local residents, as the area is close to one of the city’s busiest landmarks. Officials are continuing to investigate but confirmed no foul play has been indicated at this stage.

Two Deaths Raise Alarm Across Mississippi

The back-to-back tragedies — a young college student and an unhoused man found dead by hanging within hours of each other — have sparked conversations statewide about mental health, resources for vulnerable individuals, and the broader impact on communities.

While the deaths are not believed to be connected, their proximity in time and geography has drawn significant attention. Community leaders are urging compassion and awareness as families and friends of both men grapple with unimaginable grief.

Community Response and Support

Both cases have prompted an outpouring of support online and in person. At Delta State, students held candlelight vigils for Reed, while in Vicksburg, outreach groups have highlighted the need for more resources to support individuals experiencing homelessness.

Mental health advocates across Mississippi are using these tragedies as a reminder of the importance of accessible crisis support systems.
