NORTH CODORUS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Authorities have identified the man believed responsible for one of the deadliest law enforcement tragedies in Pennsylvania’s recent history. The suspect, Shawn Zumbrum, is accused of ambushing officers during the service of a warrant in York County, killing three and leaving several others seriously wounded before taking his own life.
The shooting unfolded just after 2 p.m. Wednesday in the 1879 block of Harr Road in North Codorus Township, a rural community about 115 miles west of Philadelphia and near the Maryland border. Officers from multiple agencies arrived to serve a warrant connected to an earlier domestic violence incident when Zumbrum allegedly opened fire.
A Scene of Chaos and Loss
According to officials briefed on the investigation, five officers were struck by gunfire during the exchange. Three have since been pronounced dead, while two others remain in grave condition. Medics scrambled to treat the wounded, with medevac helicopters landing in nearby fields to transport critically injured officers to trauma centers.
WellSpan York Hospital confirmed it received multiple patients in serious condition and immediately enacted heightened security protocols as the chaotic scene unfolded.
Heavy Law Enforcement Response
Dozens of law enforcement vehicles, tactical units, and emergency responders flooded the rural roadway. Roads surrounding Harr Road were quickly blocked, and neighbors were urged to stay indoors as police secured the area.
The Spring Grove School District issued a precautionary shelter-in-place order. Although no students or staff were involved in the incident, schools were temporarily locked down due to the close proximity of the gunfire.
Suspect Found Dead
Investigators say Zumbrum died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene after exchanging fire with officers. His actions left a trail of devastation, marking one of the darkest days for law enforcement in York County.
Leaders React to the Tragedy
Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Austin Davis called the ambush “a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face daily,” urging residents to keep the injured officers and their families in their prayers.
The Consulate of Mexico in Philadelphia also released a statement, noting its concern for the area’s large migrant worker community and urging Mexican nationals living nearby to follow official safety instructions.
A Community in Mourning
The rural farming landscape of Harr Road, normally quiet and lined with apple orchards, has been transformed into a heavily guarded crime scene. Flags outside police stations across York County have already been lowered to half-staff, and vigils are being planned to honor the fallen officers.
This latest attack comes just months after the UPMC Memorial Hospital shooting in February 2025, deepening the region’s grief and amplifying concerns over officer safety during high-risk warrant services.
Investigation Ongoing
The York County District Attorney’s Office, alongside the Pennsylvania State Police, continues to investigate the incident. Officials have not yet released the identities of the fallen officers, pending family notifications.
For now, the York County community is left reeling from the sudden loss, remembering the courage of those who served and demanding answers about how a routine warrant attempt turned into a deadly ambush.
