FRESNO, Calif. — The Fresno community is in mourning following the tragic death of 10-year-old Corday Brown, who was struck and killed by a vehicle in southwest Fresno on Sunday afternoon. The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office and family friends have confirmed his identity, sending shockwaves through the neighborhood and beyond.
A Bright Light Extinguished Too Soon
Corday was known for his infectious smile and boundless energy. Raised by his father after the loss of his mother at birth, Corday faced challenges with resilience and grace. His father, who is currently battling cancer, now faces the unimaginable pain of burying his young son.
Raymond Mayberry, a coach with the Fresno Miners Nonprofit Youth Football organization, recalled meeting Corday when he was just five years old. “He was always the same, the outgoing kid to keep everybody going and just having fun,” Mayberry said. “Corday was a fun boy. He was a fun boy. And I’m gonna miss him.”
Mayberry described Corday as a leader on and off the field, someone who inspired his teammates with his humility and spirit. “He has been through a lot, a lot, and it didn’t define who he was. He was still a good kid. He wasn’t in trouble,” Mayberry added.
The Tragic Incident
The accident occurred on Golden State Boulevard in a no-crossing zone. Corday was crossing the road with his brother and some friends when he was struck by a vehicle. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. No alcohol was involved, and the California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Mayberry, who lives in the area, is now helping the families and children who knew Corday cope with the loss. “Being a firm believer in God, there’s only one thing I can tell these babies today, and I said, ‘The Lord took him home,'” Mayberry said. “It was his time, and he’s in a better place.”
Honoring Corday’s Memory
In honor of Corday’s life, Mayberry ordered memorial decals for all the players in the league to wear on their helmets, ensuring that Corday will be with them on the field every day. A vigil was held near the scene of the crash on Monday evening, bringing together the community to remember and celebrate the young boy’s life.
As the investigation continues, the community remains united in grief and support for Corday’s family. His legacy as a bright, kind-hearted boy who brought joy to everyone around him will not be forgotten.
