BEMIDJI, Minn. — The Bemidji and Minneapolis communities are mourning the loss of Simone Senogles, a deeply loved mother, aunt, sister, friend, and respected leader, who passed away in 2025 at the age of 55.
Simone was known for her compassion, her strength, and her lifelong dedication to justice. She carried many titles in her lifetime — mother, protector, teacher, and leader — and each role reflected her unwavering commitment to her family, her community, and the causes she believed in.
Advocate and Visionary
Simone was the driving force behind MMIW218, a group she founded and built with courage, vision, and love. Under her leadership, MMIW218 became a movement that not only sought justice for missing and murdered Indigenous women but also connected broader struggles of protecting both people and the land.
She often reminded others that “violence on the land and violence on our bodies are connected,” words that embodied her mission to defend and nurture both. Her leadership inspired countless people and left behind a foundation of advocacy and resilience that will continue to guide the community.
A Beloved Family Member and Friend
To her family, Simone was more than an organizer and leader — she was the heart of their home. She was a devoted mother, a cherished sister, a loving aunt, and a trusted friend.
Her loved ones describe her as a woman of strength and generosity, someone who could lead with courage while offering warmth and love to those who needed it most.
Tributes From the Community
Since news of her passing, tributes have poured in across Minnesota and beyond. Friends, colleagues, and community members remember her as a protector, a teacher, and a fighter for justice.
“Simone was our fire, our dreamer, and our anchor,” one community member said. “Her fire will never be forgotten, and her vision will continue to guide us forward.”
Plans are being made for community gatherings to honor Simone’s life and legacy. Details will be shared with the public in the coming days.
A Lasting Legacy
Though her passing has left a profound void, Simone’s legacy will continue to shine through the work she inspired and the people she touched. Her dream of justice and safety for all families remains a powerful reminder of the path she laid down.
Rest in power, Auntie Simone. Your light, your love, and your vision will never be forgotten.
