AUGUSTA, Ga. — Authorities have identified the teenager killed in Tuesday afternoon’s shooting at Augusta Mall as Devon McClain, 17, of Augusta, according to Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen.
Officials said McClain suffered at least one gunshot wound and was transported by EMS to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:40 p.m. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the precise cause of death.
A Tragic Afternoon at Augusta Mall
The incident sent shockwaves through the busy shopping district, with law enforcement quickly responding to reports of gunfire inside the mall. Shoppers described scenes of panic as people rushed to safety, while emergency crews worked urgently to assist the victim.
Authorities have not yet released details on possible suspects or motives, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Past Encounters with Law Enforcement
McClain’s name had surfaced earlier this year in connection with a separate violent incident. In June 2025, he was charged after a shooting in Augusta’s Harrisburg neighborhood left two juveniles injured.
At that time, police arrested him on charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm, after recovering a 10mm handgun. McClain spent five days in jail before being released on bond.
That earlier case prompted Richmond County officials to implement stricter juvenile crime measures, including a tougher countywide curfew for minors aimed at addressing escalating youth violence.
Community Impact
The news of McClain’s death has sparked renewed discussions around gun violence among Augusta’s youth, particularly in public spaces like malls and neighborhoods frequented by families.
Local leaders and residents say the tragedy underscores the urgent need for community intervention programs, mentorship opportunities, and ongoing collaboration between schools, law enforcement, and families.
As the investigation continues, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
