A Sunday morning service at a Grand Blanc church ended in devastation when gunfire erupted, leaving multiple people shot before the building itself went up in flames.
The tragedy unfolded at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4285 McCandlish Road, where police confirm an active shooter opened fire during worship. Within minutes, the church became fully engulfed, with drone video showing the roof collapsing as thick black smoke rose into the sky.
Casualties Confirmed
Authorities say between six and eight people were struck by gunfire. Witnesses described seeing victims lying outside on the ground as parishioners fled for safety. Officials later confirmed that the suspect is dead, though they have not clarified whether police were involved or if the gunman died by suicide.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released, pending family notification.
Survivor Recounts Chaos
One churchgoer said the attack began without warning:
“The service had just started. We heard these loud cracks, and then people were screaming. I grabbed my children and ran. When we got outside, the building was already filling with smoke.”
Several others told investigators that multiple shots rang out before flames rapidly spread through the sanctuary.
Fire Crews Battle Massive Blaze
By the time first responders arrived, flames had consumed much of the structure. Firefighters from across Genesee County joined the effort, but officials described conditions as too dangerous to enter, forcing crews to fight the blaze from outside.
As of early afternoon, the church was still burning, with teams working to stop the fire from spreading to nearby homes and wooded areas.
Investigation Underway
The Grand Blanc Police Department, assisted by the Michigan State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), is leading the investigation. Authorities are examining whether the fire was intentionally set after the shooting.
Scanner traffic suggested a possible accelerant, though officials declined to confirm those details at this stage.
Shock and Grief in Grand Blanc
Neighbors and church members gathered near the scene in disbelief. Many embraced one another, some weeping as they watched the building burn.
“This church has been part of our community for decades,” one longtime resident said. “To see it destroyed, and to know people lost their lives inside, is beyond words.”
Counseling services and crisis support teams are being mobilized for survivors and families of the victims.
What’s Next
Officials plan to hold a press briefing later this evening with updated information on victims and the investigation. For now, the area remains closed off as police secure the scene and fire crews continue their work.
This remains a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
