SOUTHPORT, N.C. — Panic and fear swept through Southport on Saturday night after gunfire was reported at the Southport Yacht Basin, prompting an urgent police response and shelter-in-place orders for nearby residents.
The Southport Police Department said they began receiving multiple 911 calls shortly before 10 p.m. on September 27, describing shots fired in the waterfront marina area. Officers arrived within minutes to find chaos and immediately began securing the scene.
Shooter Reportedly Firing From a Boat
Authorities confirmed at 9:52 p.m. that the situation remains active. Shots were reportedly being fired from a boat on the water, and as of late Saturday night, police have not yet taken the shooter into custody.
“This remains an extremely dangerous and evolving situation,” police said in an alert. “Residents should continue to avoid the area, remain inside their homes, and call 911 if they see anything suspicious.”
Reports of Multiple Injuries
While police have not yet confirmed the total number of victims, early accounts suggest that several people may have been hurt. Witnesses described hearing rapid bursts of gunfire followed by people running from the marina.
“I heard at least six or seven shots in a row, then people screaming,” said one resident who lives nearby. “It was terrifying. The police showed up almost instantly, but you could still hear shouting and more shots even after they arrived.”
Emergency medical crews were seen transporting individuals from the scene, and local hospitals have been placed on alert. Officials have not yet disclosed the condition of any victims.
Heavy Police and Tactical Response
A large law enforcement presence, including tactical teams, was visible around the Southport Yacht Basin late Saturday night. Officers could be seen positioning near the water, attempting to contain the threat.
Residents in surrounding neighborhoods have been urged to lock doors, stay away from windows, and avoid the area until further notice.

Southport, known for its coastal charm and marina activity, has been shaken by the sudden violence. Many residents have taken to social media, sharing prayers and checking on loved ones.
“This is not the Southport we know,” one longtime resident wrote. “We’re praying for everyone’s safety until this nightmare is over.”
Ongoing Investigation
Officials emphasize that the investigation and response remain ongoing. More details, including information about the suspect and the number of injured, are expected as the situation develops.
