North Bergen, New Jersey — Tragedy struck late Sunday night, September 28, as Brian Rivera, 24, of Jersey City, was identified by his family as one of two people killed in a serious crash on Tonnelle Avenue. The incident is currently under investigation by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, as required for deaths involving a law enforcement encounter.

Crash Details

According to authorities, a North Bergen police officer in a marked vehicle was following another vehicle around 11:18 p.m. when the pursued car collided with Rivera’s vehicle near 50th and 51st streets. Rivera, who was driving, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Family members said that Brian’s younger brother, Christopher Rivera, who was a passenger in the car, recounted that a blue sedan was being pursued by police at the time of the crash. Brian reportedly attempted to steer out of the way but was struck moments later. Two other passengers, friends of Christopher, were seriously injured in the collision.

Christopher Rivera sustained multiple severe injuries, including fractured ribs, spine, and neck, as well as a deep torso wound that required surgery. He remains hospitalized in critical condition, according to family sources.
