COLUMBIA, S.C. — Columbia Police have launched an investigation after kayakers discovered a man’s body Tuesday evening in the Congaree River near Wheat Street.
According to officials, the kayakers were paddling along the river on the Columbia side around 6:00 p.m. when they spotted what appeared to be a body floating near the bank. They immediately contacted emergency services, prompting a swift response from Columbia Police, the Columbia Fire Department, and the Richland County Coroner’s Office.
Authorities confirmed that the body was recovered safely from the water shortly after crews arrived on scene. The area near the 400 block of Wheat Street was temporarily closed off as investigators worked into the evening hours to process the scene.
Police described the victim only as an adult male. His identity has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. The Richland County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
In a statement, Columbia Police said detectives are pursuing all possible leads and are awaiting autopsy results before determining whether foul play may have been involved. Officials have not disclosed how long the body may have been in the water or whether any personal belongings were found nearby.
Residents reported seeing multiple emergency vehicles and police activity along the riverfront on Tuesday evening, sparking concern on social media. Authorities have since reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community but urged anyone with information to come forward.
The Congaree River, which runs through the heart of Columbia, is a popular spot for kayaking, fishing, and other recreational activities. However, the river’s fluctuating currents and changing conditions have been linked to several incidents in recent years.
Anyone with information that could assist investigators is urged to contact Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC or submit tips online at www.midlandscrimestoppers.com.
