AUGUSTA, GA — Authorities have identified the man found dead Tuesday afternoon at a Chevron gas station in Augusta as 70-year-old Charlie Creech. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that Creech was the victim of a homicide, and an active search is underway for the suspect, Jeffery Eutsay — a man recently released from prison after serving time for a similar violent crime.

Creech, who had experienced homelessness in recent years, was a familiar figure in the area. Though he lived much of his life on the margins, many in the community knew him by name. His death has struck a somber chord among residents and raised questions about the protection — or lack of it — for the city’s most vulnerable.

Deputies responded to the Chevron station after receiving a call about a man found unresponsive near the building. Investigators quickly determined that foul play was involved, and the scene was secured as a crime scene. Officials have not yet released how Creech was killed, but they confirmed it was a deliberate act.

The investigation has now turned toward Jeffery Eutsay, a man in his early 40s, who previously served time for a 2018 stabbing at another gas station in Augusta. Authorities have not said whether Creech and Eutsay knew each other, but the similarities between the two cases have become a focus for detectives.

Eutsay had been recently released from prison. He is not in custody, and as of Wednesday evening, law enforcement officials say he is being actively sought as a person of interest. They are asking the public to remain alert and report any sightings or information to authorities immediately.

For many who knew Charlie Creech, the news is both heartbreaking and infuriating. While Creech had limited means and no fixed address, he was described by locals as a quiet and humble man who often kept to himself. His death, they say, underscores just how dangerous life can be for people without shelter — and how easily their lives can be overlooked until tragedy strikes.

Law enforcement officials say the investigation remains active and that further details, including any pending charges, will be released once they are confirmed.
