A peaceful Miami evening erupted into chaos Wednesday night when two police officers were shot while responding to reports of gunfire, leading to a tense armed standoff with the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Mason Triana.
According to the Miami Police Department, officers responded to the area of NW 17th Avenue and 26th Street around 8:45 p.m. after receiving alerts of gunfire in the neighborhood. As soon as they arrived, the officers were met with gunfire from Triana.
During the exchange, one officer sustained a gunshot wound to the knee, while another was struck in the ankle. Both were immediately transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police Chief Manuel Morales confirmed that both officers are in stable condition and “in good spirits.”
“These are brave officers who acted without hesitation to protect our residents,” Chief Morales said during a late-night briefing. “We’re thankful their injuries weren’t more severe and that they’re recovering.”
After the initial shooting, Triana fled into a nearby home and barricaded himself inside, armed with what police described as a rifle. The neighborhood was quickly surrounded as SWAT officers, negotiators, and additional police units established a secure perimeter.
