MILLBROOK, Ala. — The Millbrook community is heartbroken following a devastating four-vehicle collision Thursday evening that claimed the lives of Mary F. Ford, 60, of Millbrook; Anthony L. Smith, 33, of Demopolis; and Diane E. Smith, 65, of Indiana, and left two others injured near the 17 Springs complex.

According to the Millbrook Police Department, the crash occurred shortly after 6:30 p.m. along Highway 14, a heavily traveled roadway connecting Millbrook to neighboring communities. Preliminary findings suggest that one of the vehicles involved may have crossed into oncoming traffic, setting off a violent chain reaction involving three other cars.

Emergency responders from Millbrook Fire & Rescue, the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office, and Alabama State Troopers rushed to the scene. Witnesses described a chaotic and heartbreaking sight — twisted metal, shattered glass, and bystanders attempting to comfort survivors as first responders worked frantically to free those trapped in the wreckage.

“By the time officers arrived, it was clear this was a catastrophic accident,” said Millbrook Police Chief P.K. Johnson. “Our hearts break for the families of those who lost their lives. Despite immediate efforts from paramedics and firefighters, three victims were pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Two other individuals were taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries described as non-life-threatening. Their names have not yet been released pending family notification.

The loss has deeply shaken the Millbrook community. Mary Ford, a longtime resident, was remembered by friends as a kind-hearted woman active in her church and neighborhood. Anthony Smith of Demopolis and Diane Smith of Indiana were visiting the area, according to authorities.

“This tragedy hits home for everyone in Millbrook,” said Mayor Al Kelley. “We are a close-knit town, and tonight we grieve together. Our thoughts and prayers are with every family affected by this terrible event.”

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is leading the investigation to determine what caused the crash. Investigators are examining whether factors such as speed, driver impairment, or weather conditions may have played a role.

As the community mourns, local churches and outreach groups are offering counseling and emotional support to those affected. A candlelight vigil is expected to be held this weekend near the 17 Springs complex to honor the three victims.

“This is a moment for our town to come together,” said Reverend James Coleman of First Baptist Church. “We may not understand why such things happen, but we can show love, strength, and unity in the face of loss.”

The tragic crash serves as a painful reminder of how quickly lives can be changed in an instant — and of the resilience that defines the Millbrook community in times of sorrow.
