HITCHCOCK, TX — The Hitchcock community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Haze Gardner, a 26-year-old resident whose life was tragically cut short in a boating accident early Friday morning.
According to the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. on October 17, 2025, when deputies were called to assist the Hitchcock Police Department following reports of a serious boating crash in the area.
Preliminary reports indicate that two people — Haze Gardner and a female passenger — were ejected from their vessel after it struck an unknown object in the water. First responders located the female victim and airlifted her via Life Flight to UTMB Galveston Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
The Galveston County Marine Division and Dive Team immediately began search and recovery efforts for Gardner, who had gone missing following the crash. After several hours of intensive recovery work, Haze Gardner was found and pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigators from Texas Parks and Wildlife, the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit, and the Crime Scene Unit are working together to determine what caused the accident. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether weather, speed, or mechanical issues were contributing factors.
Haze Gardner was known throughout Hitchcock as a kind-hearted and hardworking young man with a love for the outdoors — especially fishing and boating. Friends describe him as someone who “never met a stranger” and who always carried a smile, even on the hardest days.
“Haze loved being on the water,” said one family friend. “That’s where he found peace. It’s devastating to lose him this way.”
Gardner’s sudden passing has left his family and the small Hitchcock community in shock. Friends and neighbors have gathered to support one another, sharing stories of his warmth, humor, and love for life.
“He was the kind of person everyone wanted around — funny, dependable, and always ready to lend a hand,” another friend shared.
The tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the risks of boating, particularly during early morning hours when visibility is limited. Authorities urge boaters to use proper safety equipment and remain aware of navigation hazards.
A memorial for Haze Gardner is being planned by family and friends, who say they want to celebrate his life in the place he loved most — near the water.
“We will remember him for his heart, his laughter, and the light he brought into our lives,” his family said in a statement. “Haze will always be with us.”
As the investigation continues, officials ask that anyone with information about the incident contact the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department or the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office.
May Haze Gardner rest in eternal peace. His spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
