Community Mourns the Loss of Beloved Husband, Father, and Union Brother — Fund Established to Support His Family
ST. LOUIS, MO (October 18, 2025) — The St. Louis construction community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Joe Mahoney, a 36-year-old journeyman laborer with Concrete Strategies and a dedicated member of LiUNA Local 42, who was fatally injured after being struck by a vehicle on October 13, 2025, while working near the Albion apartment development project in the Central West End.
Authorities said the tragic incident occurred while Mahoney was assisting with traffic control during equipment movement at the busy construction site. Emergency responders arrived swiftly, and Mahoney was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite extensive medical efforts and the outpouring of prayers from loved ones and colleagues, he succumbed to his injuries three days later, on October 16, after being removed from life support.
A Dedicated Worker and Respected Union Member
For the past 11 years, Joe Mahoney had been a proud member of LiUNA Local 42, known across job sites for his dedication, reliability, and positive spirit. He spent the last seven years with Concrete Strategies, one of the region’s leading construction firms, and had previously worked with Clayco, where his reputation for hard work and craftsmanship earned him deep respect among peers.
“Joe was the type of man you could always count on,” said one coworker. “He showed up every day ready to give his best — not just to the job, but to the people around him. Everyone loved working with him because he made you feel like part of a family.”
His union brothers and sisters described him as a true teammate — someone who would lend a hand, offer a smile, and put others first, both on and off the job.
A Loving Husband and Father
Beyond his career, Mahoney’s greatest pride was his family. He leaves behind his wife, Lauren, their two-and-a-half-year-old son, and a baby girl due in January. Friends say Joe’s life revolved around providing for his family and ensuring they were surrounded by love and stability.
“Everything Joe did, he did for his family,” a close friend shared. “He worked long hours, sometimes in the toughest conditions, but he never complained. He just wanted his kids to have the best start in life.”
Lauren, who is now preparing to welcome their second child while coping with unimaginable grief, has received an outpouring of support from friends, coworkers, and the larger community.
Community Rallies Around the Mahoney Family
In response to the tragedy, a fund has been established to assist Lauren and the children during this difficult time. The initiative aims to help cover living expenses, childcare, and other needs as the family adjusts to life without their husband and father — the family’s primary provider.
In addition to financial contributions, community members are collecting essential items for the children, including:
- Diapers (all sizes)
- Wipes
- Baby girl clothes and baby gear
- Toys and winter clothing for their son
Physical donations can be dropped off at the following locations:
- Clayco — 8640 Evans Ave., St. Louis, MO 63134
- LiUNA Local 42 — 301 S. Ewing Ave., St. Louis, MO 63103
Organizers say every contribution — no matter how small — will make a difference as Lauren focuses on caring for her children and finding strength amid profound loss.
A Legacy of Generosity and Courage
Even in death, Joe Mahoney’s selflessness continues to touch lives. As an organ donor, he has given the gift of life to others, ensuring his spirit of generosity endures far beyond the worksite or the community he loved so deeply.
“When we lose a brother on the job, we don’t just lose a coworker — we lose family,” said a statement from LiUNA Local 42. “Joe’s hard work, his humor, and his heart will forever be a part of what we build. His legacy will live on in every life he touched.”
Mahoney’s colleagues plan to honor his memory through a series of tributes at upcoming job sites and union events, celebrating not only his professional contributions but the friendships and bonds he built throughout his career.
A Community United in Grief
The tragedy has shaken the St. Louis construction industry, reminding many of the dangers workers face daily in their commitment to building the city’s future. Yet amid the sorrow, Joe Mahoney’s story has also inspired unity, compassion, and resilience — values he embodied throughout his life.
As tributes continue to pour in, one message is clear: Joe Mahoney was more than a worker — he was a husband, a father, a friend, and a hero whose final act of giving will continue to save and heal others.
A memorial service is expected to be announced in the coming days.
Friends, colleagues, and community members are encouraged to keep Lauren, their son, and their soon-to-arrive daughter in their thoughts and prayers as they navigate the difficult road ahead.
Joe’s life was defined by hard work, kindness, and love — and though his time was cut tragically short, his impact will endure for generations to come.
