Detroit, Michigan — A late-night gathering in a normally quiet west side neighborhood turned tragic Thursday night when gunfire erupted, leaving one man dead and the community in shock.
According to Detroit Police, the shooting occurred around 11 p.m. on Rutherford Street near Tireman Avenue, where a group of roughly 20 to 25 people had gathered. What began as a social event quickly descended into chaos after an argument escalated into violence.
Witnesses described hearing a rapid series of gunshots followed by screams. “I was dozing for the first time that night when I heard five very fast shots,” recalled Moyya Griffin, a nearby resident. “To be woken up by gunfire and gut-wrenching cries—it’s horrible.”
Another neighbor, who asked not to be named, described the terrifying moments that followed. “There were screams for a little bit, then it got quiet, and then there were more screams after they realized someone had been hurt.”
The victim, whose identity has not yet been released, was transported to a nearby hospital, but despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced deceased.
Lonnell Jefferson, another resident in the area, said the neighborhood has always been close-knit. “Everyone around here really knows each other—it’s like family. We just started seeing younger people coming into the area and hanging around, but something like this… it’s devastating.”
As daylight broke Friday morning, yellow police tape still marked the scene, located near a neighborhood park. Detectives and forensic teams combed the area for evidence while officers canvassed the community for witnesses.
Authorities are now searching for the suspect involved in the fatal shooting. Investigators believe the gunfire was the result of a heated dispute that broke out during the gathering.
Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
The investigation remains active, and the Detroit community continues to mourn the loss of a life taken far too soon.
