Lincoln, Nebraska — The skateboarding world and the community of Lincoln are mourning the loss of Kevin Wilkins, a beloved husband, father, editor, and lifelong advocate for skate culture, who passed away peacefully after a courageous five-year battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family and loved ones under hospice care at his home in Lincoln.

Kevin’s journey was one defined by creativity, friendship, and passion. A proud graduate of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Kevin went on to leave an indelible mark on the world of skateboarding media. As an editor, writer, and visionary, he helped shape some of the industry’s most iconic publications, including Transworld Skateboarding, The Skateboard Mag, Warp Magazine, Dirt Magazine, and Club Homeboy. His storytelling and editorial eye not only chronicled the evolution of skateboarding but also captured the heart and humanity of the culture he loved so deeply.

Born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, Kevin remained true to his roots even as his work reached global audiences. Those who knew him describe him as a man of integrity, humility, and kindness — someone who elevated others with his encouragement and generosity.

His close friends and collaborators recall a man whose passion for skateboarding was only matched by his compassion for people. “Kevin was an amazing husband, father, friend, and he will be missed by so many,” one longtime colleague shared. “He fought the good fight with grace and courage. The world is a better place because of him.”

Kevin’s impact extended far beyond his professional accomplishments. To many, he was a mentor, a listener, and a loyal friend who made everyone feel valued. Even as he faced his own health challenges, Kevin continued to support others with empathy and strength.

One of Kevin’s friends, who bonded with him over their shared fight with prostate cancer, reflected on the profound humanity of their friendship:
“I didn’t know Kevin as the editor, the promoter, or the icon. I just knew him as Kevin — a skateboarder from Omaha. He was a genuine, caring human being. Our conversations meant the world to me, and I’m grateful for the light he brought into my life.”

In his final weeks, Kevin remained true to his character — reflective, gracious, and connected. His friend wrote him a message of love and respect that captured what so many felt about him:
“We never got to shake hands or hug, but I give thanks for our connection. You are a sharing, caring, genuine soul. May you travel through the valley and fear no evil, for you are righteous and pure.”

Kevin leaves behind his beloved wife, Cheryl Wilkins, their family, and countless friends and colleagues who admired his brilliance, authenticity, and strength.

A GoFundMe has been created to support Cheryl and the Wilkins family during this difficult time: https://gofund.me/c623a4e9. The fund also aims to raise awareness about prostate cancer, a cause Kevin was deeply passionate about, encouraging men over 40 to get regular PSA screenings.

For many in the skateboarding world, Kevin Wilkins was more than an editor — he was a voice, a teacher, and a friend who gave the sport and its community a sense of belonging. His legacy will live on in the stories he told, the lives he touched, and the culture he helped build.

Rest in peace, Kevin Wilkins — a true pioneer, mentor, and friend. Your words, your heart, and your spirit will continue to inspire generations to come. 🕊️🛹
