Detroit, Michigan — A tense scene unfolded late Saturday evening as Detroit Police responded to reports of multiple shots fired near Frankfort and Lenox Streets on the city’s East Side. The incident prompted a heavy police presence, with officers from the 5th Precinct quickly securing the area amid reports of a large gathering nearby.
According to preliminary information, the first calls came in shortly before 9:00 p.m., with residents reporting what sounded like a series of rapid gunshots followed by people fleeing the scene. Upon arrival, officers encountered a large group dispersing from the intersection and began canvassing the area for shell casings, evidence, and potential witnesses.
As of early Sunday morning, no injuries have been officially confirmed, though detectives are investigating whether any nearby homes or vehicles were struck by gunfire. Authorities also have not yet determined what may have led to the incident but indicated that disturbances have occasionally been reported in the area during weekend gatherings.
Witnesses described moments of panic as the sound of gunfire echoed through the neighborhood. “It happened so fast — I heard about ten pops, then people started running everywhere,” said one nearby resident. “Police were here within minutes.”
The Detroit Police Department confirmed that officers are reviewing surveillance footage from surrounding properties and nearby businesses to help identify any suspects or vehicles connected to the shooting.
“Our priority is ensuring the safety of the residents in this neighborhood,” a police spokesperson said late Saturday. “We’re asking anyone who may have seen or recorded anything to contact investigators immediately. Even small details can help.”
Community leaders have voiced growing concern about recurring weekend disturbances in the area, urging residents to stay alert and cooperate with law enforcement as investigations continue.
The 5th Precinct has since increased patrols across Detroit’s East Side to maintain order and prevent any further incidents through the remainder of the weekend.
Anyone with information related to the shooting is asked to contact the Detroit Police Department’s 5th Precinct Investigative Unit or reach out anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP (773-2587).
