Garner, NC — A tragic act of violence has shaken the Garner community after WakeMed Campus Police Officer Roger Smith, 59, was fatally shot while on duty at the WakeMed Garner Healthplex on Saturday morning, November 8, 2025. Authorities have since charged 29-year-old Benji Martin Jr. of Garner, NC, in connection with the deadly shooting.
At approximately 9:00 a.m., Garner Police officers responded to a report of gunfire inside the emergency department lobby. When they arrived, they found Officer Smith suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by medical staff and first responders, he was pronounced dead shortly after.
Following an extensive investigation and consultation with the Wake County District Attorney’s Office, Martin Jr. was arrested and charged with murder. Officials have not released a possible motive at this time, but investigators are working to determine what led to the deadly confrontation.
Medical staff and witnesses described the moment as chaotic yet marked by Officer Smith’s bravery. They said his actions likely prevented additional loss of life inside the busy facility. “He put the safety of others before his own — even in his final moments,” said Garner Police Chief Adams. “This is a heartbreaking and senseless act of violence. Our deepest condolences go to the Smith family, the WakeMed Campus Police Department, and the entire WakeMed staff.”
Officer Smith was a respected veteran of law enforcement, remembered for his compassion, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to the people he served. Colleagues described him as calm under pressure, dedicated to his duties, and always willing to lend a hand to others — both in and out of uniform.
“Roger was the type of officer everyone looked up to,” one fellow officer shared. “He led by example, and his kindness made an impact on everyone who knew him.”
The Garner Police Department, in collaboration with the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and the Wake County District Attorney’s Office, continues to review evidence and interview witnesses to ensure justice is served.
