Jamesport Tragedy: Retired Officer Edward Crohan Fatally Shoots Wife Stephanie Crohan Before Taking Own Life

JAMESPORT, NY — A heartbreaking tragedy has unfolded in the quiet neighborhood of Lagoon Court in Jamesport, where a retired law enforcement officer fatally shot his wife before turning the gun on himself, authorities say. The victims have been identified as 62-year-old Edward Crohan and his wife, 63-year-old Stephanie Crohan.

The Suffolk County Police Department confirmed that the incident is being investigated as a murder-suicide. Officers from the Riverhead Town Police Department were dispatched to the couple’s home around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, after receiving a request for a welfare check. Upon entering the residence, officers made a grim discovery: both Edward and Stephanie were found dead from gunshot wounds.

Following an initial investigation, detectives with the Suffolk County Homicide Squad determined that Edward Crohan was the shooter in what they are calling a domestic homicide-suicide. The motive remains unknown, and no note or explanation was found at the scene. Authorities have not released any further details about the moments leading up to the tragic event.

Edward Crohan was a retired officer who had served with the Southampton Police Department, according to public pension records and his LinkedIn profile. Known to many in the law enforcement community, his decades of service were described as “dedicated and professional” by former colleagues who are now grappling with disbelief over the tragedy.

Stephanie Crohan was also retired, having worked for Suffolk County. She was receiving pension benefits through the New York State Police and Fire Retirement System. Those who knew her describe her as kind, caring, and deeply involved in her community.

Neighbors say the Crohans had lived in the area for several years and were generally quiet and private. “You’d never expect something like this from them,” said one neighbor. “It’s just so tragic. Everyone on this block is in shock.”

Police have not speculated on what might have triggered the deadly shooting, and no prior domestic disturbances had been reported at the residence, according to law enforcement sources.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the case, and the Suffolk County Homicide Squad is asking anyone with information to come forward. Those with relevant details are urged to call 631-852-6392.

As the Jamesport community mourns the loss of two lives, friends, neighbors, and former colleagues are left struggling to comprehend how such a devastating act could unfold behind closed doors in an otherwise peaceful neighborhood.

Grief counselors and local support services have been made available to those affected by the tragedy. A memorial is expected to be planned in the coming days to honor the lives of Edward and Stephanie Crohan.
