Kaslo, British Columbia – The close-knit communities of Kaslo and Meadow Creek are mourning the tragic loss of Jason Remple, owner and lead guide of Stellar Heliskiing, who was among three individuals killed in a devastating avalanche on March 24, 2025. The incident also claimed the lives of Jeff Keenan, a professional snowboarder from Whistler, and Alex Pashley, Global Sports Marketing Manager (Snow) at The North Face from Idaho. A fourth individual, Clay Mitchell of CK9 Studios, was critically injured and remains hospitalized.
The Incident
The avalanche occurred around 12:30 p.m. in the Clute Creek watershed, east of Kootenay Lake. Two groups of heli-skiers, guided by Stellar Heliskiing, were awaiting pickup in a staging area below the treeline when a transport helicopter pilot observed the avalanche and sounded a warning. While one group managed to escape, the other was swept into a tree line by the powerful slide. Emergency responders, including Kaslo Search and Rescue, arrived promptly, but despite their efforts, Remple, Keenan, and Pashley were pronounced dead at the scene.

Avalanche Conditions and Safety
On the day of the tragedy, Avalanche Canada had issued a High (Level 4) danger rating for the Kootenay Lake region, warning of very dangerous avalanche conditions due to rising temperatures and strong sun. Despite the group’s experience and precautions, the unpredictable nature of the snowpack led to this unfortunate event.
Moving Forward
As investigations continue, the focus remains on supporting the affected families and communities. Stellar Heliskiing has suspended operations, and local organizations are rallying to provide assistance and honor the legacies of those lost. The tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the inherent risks associated with backcountry skiing and the importance of continuous vigilance and respect for nature’s unpredictability.
