Courtland Township, Michigan — June 24, 2025
A tragic morning unfolded in Kent County as two first responders—a firefighter and a paramedic—were killed in a devastating crash near Rockford, Michigan. The deadly incident occurred around 8:10 a.m. at the intersection of 13 Mile Road NE and Courtland Drive NE in Courtland Township.

According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, a rescue vehicle carrying the first responders collided with another vehicle, rolled over, and burst into flames. One of the victims was pinned inside the burning vehicle and could not be rescued in time. Despite the rapid response of emergency crews, both individuals died at the scene.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the deceased pending notification of their families. However, both victims were confirmed to be active-duty first responders en route to or returning from an emergency call when the crash occurred.

Sheriff’s deputies, firefighters, and medics from surrounding departments responded quickly, extinguishing the fire and securing the scene. The intersection remained closed for several hours as crash reconstruction teams investigated.

A spokesperson for the Kent County Sheriff’s Office stated:

“This is a heartbreaking loss for our first responder family and the entire community. These individuals dedicated their lives to saving others, and today, that dedication cost them their lives.”

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with deputies examining factors such as speed, road conditions, and the mechanical state of the vehicles involved.

Local leaders and emergency agencies expressed their grief and support. The Rockford Ambulance Service and area fire departments are mourning the loss of their colleagues, with several stations lowering flags to half-staff in their honor.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the Rockford area, a close-knit community just north of Grand Rapids. Residents have begun placing flowers and notes at local fire stations, and vigils are expected in the coming days. Plans for a joint memorial or public service are underway.

Local officials emphasized the inherent risks first responders take daily to serve and protect:

“Today, Rockford and Kent County lost two true heroes. We will never forget their service, their courage, or their sacrifice.”
