TRAGIC SHOOTING IN MOUNTAIN VIEW: NO CHARGES IN DEATH OF FORMER HICKORY CRAWDADS CATCHER SHAWN HOOD
MOUNTAIN VIEW, N.C.— Authorities have confirmed that no criminal charges will be filed in the shooting death of 58-year-old Shawn Hood, who was killed during a mass shooting earlier this month in Catawba County. Hood, of Lenoir, was the sole fatality in the June 1 incident, which also left 11 others injured during a chaotic and violent house party on Walnut Acres Drive in Mountain View.
Victim Identified as Former Bullpen Catcher
Shawn Hood was well known in local sports circles, having served as a bullpen catcher for the Hickory Crawdads baseball team in the late 1990s. Friends and former teammates remember him as a kind and committed athlete who loved the game and contributed meaningfully to his community.
His unexpected and tragic death has sent shockwaves through the region, especially among those who knew him personally or professionally.
What Happened at the Party
The shooting unfolded during a large gathering at a residence on Walnut Acres Drive. According to Major Aaron Turk of the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, shots were first fired from an elevated position in a neighboring yard overlooking the party. Armed individuals at the party reportedly returned fire in response.
Hood was struck and killed during the crossfire. Following a weeks-long investigation, authorities determined that the person who fired the fatal shot was acting in self-defense and did not intend to hit Hood.
“Our investigation has been thorough and is supported by forensic evidence and witness statements,” said Maj. Turk. “In North Carolina, self-defense laws are well-defined, and in this case, charges will not be filed.”
A Violent Scene with Dozens of Shots Fired
According to officials, at least 80 shots were exchanged between the gunmen on the hillside and individuals at the party. Several different firearms were used in the incident, though investigators have not publicly identified the types. Turk did confirm, however, that a “long weapon” was involved in the assault.
The names of the other 11 people injured in the shooting have not been released. Their conditions remain unclear.
Still Many Unanswered Questions
Law enforcement officials acknowledged that while they’ve been able to reconstruct much of what occurred, several questions remain. It is still unknown how many suspects were firing from the elevated yard, what sparked the violence, or if the party was specifically targeted.
“This was a complex and fast-moving scene,” Turk said. “We are continuing to gather information and ask the public for help. If you saw anything or have video evidence, please contact our office.”
Community Reacts to a Life Lost
The loss of Shawn Hood has deeply impacted the community. The Hickory Crawdads baseball organization released a statement expressing sadness and honoring Hood’s memory:
“Shawn was a part of the Crawdads family and a beloved member of the North Carolina baseball community. His death is a tragic loss. We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”
Watch the Press Conference
A joint press conference was held Tuesday, June 24, where Catawba County officials presented the results of their investigation.

This shooting serves as a grim reminder of how quickly violence can erupt and how even those uninvolved can pay the ultimate price. As the community mourns the loss of Shawn Hood, law enforcement continues to search for answers and accountability.
