Dwayne Russell Arrested After Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound Investigation Uncovers Illegal Firearm Possession

 

 

 

ILION, NY — On May 17, 2025, authorities responded to a reported shooting incident after 39-year-old Dwayne Russell was found inside a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg. The nature of the injury and the circumstances surrounding the incident prompted an immediate investigation by the Major Crimes Unit.

Following an extensive inquiry, investigators determined that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted while Russell was seated inside the vehicle. There was no indication that anyone else was involved in the shooting.

However, further investigation revealed that Russell was in unlawful possession of the firearm involved in the incident. As a result, on June 24, 2025, Major Crimes investigators arrested Russell and charged him with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree and Criminal Possession of a Firearm.

Under New York State law, possession of a weapon without proper authorization is a serious offense, carrying significant legal penalties. Officials have not disclosed whether Russell had any prior criminal history or additional charges pending.

Russell is currently being held in custody and is expected to appear in court in the coming days. Authorities urge all firearm owners to exercise caution and adhere to safe handling practices to prevent accidents.

The Ilion Police Department and the Major Crimes Unit continue their investigation and encourage anyone with information related to this case to come forward.
